Octopus is a celebrated seafood delicacy throughout the world.
Originally hailed in the Mediterranean as a celebrated seafood delicacy, octopus has become a true epicurean treasure throughout the world. Delicious and mild, the unique flavor of octopus is quite extraordinary when boiled, stewed, marinated, or grilled. You’ll find wonderful octopus recipes including octopus salad, octopus pasta, and more. Be sure to check our recipe collection for some delicious Octopus recipe ideas. The octopus for sale at Gorton’s Fresh Seafood is fully cleaned and ready for cooking. Each octopus is also individually frozen in a distinctive pinwheel form that preserves the octopus’ shape and creates a stunning presentation.
What's Included
When you order you'll receive a 1 to 2 lb whole, cleaned, frozen octopus. Each octopus is packed in a clear plastic bag.
Preparation & Handling
Frozen octopi are cleaned prior to packaging and are ready to be cooked upon thawing. To thaw, the octopus can be stored in the refrigerator the day before cooking or placed under cold running water for about half an hour per pound. They can be stored in the freezer for up to three months. Once thawed, the octopus should be used within three days.
Octopus flesh is tough and chewy, but when cooked properly, the meat is white, firm, and has a sweet, mild flavor. Octopus should be marinated or boiled before being used in a prepared dish. Place it into boiling, salted water and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the skin can be peeled off and a fork easily goes into the meat.
Octopus is a wonderful addition to salads or any pasta dish and is best boiled or steamed. Octopus is also great on the grill. Cut into 3 to 4 inch lengths and place on the grill in a tin basket. Cook for 10-20 minutes at a high temperature.

Item Details and Quality
With eight arms completely adorned with suction cups and three hearts that pump blue blood, there is little wonder the octopus is one of the strangest animals we use for food. This odd looking sea creature is a mollusk even though it has no shell. The most highly developed of its species, the octopus has the most complex brain with vision as its highest developed sense.
The octopus for sale from Gorton’s Fresh Seafood is a cephalopod. The octopus has a pliable body that consists of tentacles sprouting directly from its head. This is where the Greek word “cephalopod” is derived from. The translation is “headed foot."
Raw octopus meat has a purplish color, although the flesh turns white when cooked. There is little waste with octopus. Every part of this creature can be eaten with the exception of the eyes, the mouth, and the viscera, which are all removed prior to freezing.
Octopus recipes vary greatly from fried to pickled to grilled, so you’re sure to find several octopus recipes that will become favorites. In fact, an Australian favorite is barbequed octopus.
